Although the many landmarks and important monuments of Lake Tahoe and somewhat spread around, most are easy to reach by either bus or car, being located within the main towns and resorts. Tahoe City is home to a couple of particularly special landmarks, both the Hellman Ehrman Mansion at the Sugar Pine Point State Park, and also the Chapel at Lake Tahoe, which presides over the North Lake Boulevard and is regularly used for local weddings.

At the Zephyr Cove, the views from the Logan Shoals Vista Point are hard to better, while for man-made landmarks of grand proportions, pay a visit to South lake Tahoe, where the Vikingsholm Castle is sited. The Vikingsholm Castle is part of an expansive estate at Emerald Bay and dates back to the late 1920s, when it was created by wealthy individual Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight and her enormous team of some 200 workers.

The Chapel at Lake Tahoe can be found next to Tahoe City, on the north shore and near to the Truckee River. Offering nothing short of tranquility and romance, this particular chapel must be one of the most perfect spots to get married in existence. This is a very intimate and pretty chapel, enhanced further by the panoramic lake views, wildflower meadows and mountainous backdrop. Fully coordinated wedding packages are available and always very popular, including limousine services, floral displays, catering and photography.

Lake Tahoe Landmarks and Monuments: Hellman Ehrman Mansion

Located within the Sugar Pine Point State Park at Tahoma, and on the western shore of Lake Tahoe, the Hellman Ehrman Mansion is one of the region's most important landmarks of its kind. This grand summerhouse was once the much-used summer retreat of the wealthy Hellman-Ehrman family and was constructed in 1902, featuring Queen Anne-style architecture with distinctive turret-like features. Guided tours are conducted by rangers and take visitors around the rooms, showing features such as the wooden beams, marble fireplaces, antique furniture, vegetable garden and nearby log cabin. When the family came to Hellman-Ehrman family came to the mansion, they were always accompanied by a team of no less than 30 different servants, who ranged from maids and cooks, to chauffeurs, gardeners and even tailors.

The Logan Shoals Vista Point lies off the Highway US-50 and on the northerly side of Cave Rock. This popular viewing area is easy to find, since it is very well signposted. Whilst the may be a number of different scenic outlooks scattered along the easterly shoreline, few compare to the beautiful scenery available at the Vista Point at Logan Shoals. Expect to see breathtaking views across the lake and the Emerald Bay, which is very much dominated here by Mount Tallac. Many people come here to picnic, or simply to capture the views on their camera.

Lake Tahoe Landmarks and Monuments: Vikingsholm Castle

The Vikingsholm Castle itself was designed by Lora Knight's Swedish nephew, Lennart Palme, and this magnificent landmark features unmistakable Scandinavian features, inspired by special trips to Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway, where both Lora and Lennart toured historical buildings from the 2nd century onwards for ideas. The resultant Vikingsholm Castle is well known around Lake Tahoe for its meticulous attention to detail and Nordic stone carvings, with many features being rather church-like in their appearance. Guided tours are available during the summer months and last around an hour. Of note, the Eagle Point State Park is close by, along with an appealing 1.7-mile / 2.7-km hiking trail.
